Welcome Sweet Friends,
I trust that everyone had a fantastic weekend, as I certainly did! My weekend was marked by a delightful and impromptu road trip alongside my husband to the charming town of Franklin, Tennessee. This picturesque locale has effortlessly carved its way into our hearts as one of our preferred weekend retreats, conveniently situated in close proximity to our home.ย
Isn’t it true that after returning from a vacation, be it a long getaway or just a short overnight stay, you suddenly realize what you’ve truly missed? It’s not just the comfort of your own bed or the familiarity of your surroundings; it’s that undeniable connection and companionship you share with your beloved pets. Yes, I’m referring to those adorable, cuddly, and endlessly playful fur babies that hold a special place in our hearts. There’s a saying that rings true in moments like these: “There’s no place like home.”
Our affection for our pets borders on obsession, doesn’t it? Most of us have at least one four-legged companion, and the bond we share with them is something truly unique and deeply cherished. It’s a connection that’s challenging for anyone else to fully grasp or appreciate.
Not long ago, we had the pleasure of receiving a call from a lady who had an extraordinary request for our design services. She was on a mission to create the perfect barndominium โ that unique blend of a barn and a condominium โ not just for herself, but also for her cherished canine companion. What made this conversation particularly intriguing was her inquiry about a specific barndominium project I had previously been involved in. In that project, we had ingeniously incorporated a dog washing station within the washroom, complete with a dedicated entrance exclusively for the four-legged resident of the house. The sheer enthusiasm in her voice as she described her vision for this upcoming barndominium build had me eagerly anticipating the creation of what would surely become a haven of luxury for her pampered pup.
For a span of 14 years, I had the privilege of sharing my life with an adorable Yorkie-Poo. Throughout those years, I often found myself facing the comical challenge of washing and grooming my little companion. It seemed like every bath turned into a mini adventure, with my Yorkie-Poo attempting to make a daring escape from the sink, only to be followed by a comical game of “catch me if you can” before he inevitably shook water in all directions, drenching not only me but also the walls and floors.
And let’s not even get started on the muddy paw prints that would appear all over the house after a rainy day walk. Dealing with the aftermath of those excursions became a regular part of my routine. But, as any dog owner and lover would attest, these small inconveniences were far outweighed by the joy and companionship our furry friends bring into our lives. Through my experiences as a dog owner, I gained a deeper appreciation for the shared challenges and needs of fellow pet lovers in similar situations.
In recent times, I’ve noticed a growing trend among homeowners who are commissioning custom house plans that cater to the comfort and needs of their beloved pets. It’s a heartwarming testament to the deep bond we share with our furry companions. These plans often include thoughtfully designed spaces dedicated to our pets’ well-being.
There are numerous creative ways to integrate these pet-friendly spaces into a custom home. For instance, you might transform a mechanical room into a luxurious haven for your furry friend, or utilize the often-overlooked space beneath unused stairs to craft a cozy living area. The possibilities are endless, limited only by your imagination and your pet’s requirements.
Consider the practicality of creating a designated area for pet supplies. Leashes, pet food, cozy bedding, and kitty litter all deserve a specific storage spot that’s easily accessible and conveniently located near an exterior door. This not only streamlines your pet care routine but also minimizes clutter in your living spaces.
It’s also worth thinking about the comfort and convenience of your human guests. While we adore our pets, it’s important to recognize that not everyone shares the same level of enthusiasm for them. Consequently, it’s courteous to ensure that any pet spaces are discreetly tucked away from the main living areas, allowing visitors to enjoy a pet-free environment if they prefer.
Above all, it’s a universal truth that every animal deserves a snug and secure sanctuary designed exclusively for their needs. After all, our pets are cherished members of our families, and creating a cozy haven for them is a beautiful expression of our love and care.
It’s important to acknowledge that keeping our beloved pets confined to a single area for extended periods can have adverse effects on their well-being. This prolonged confinement often leads to feelings of anxiety and stress in our pets, which, in turn, may manifest as undesirable behavior. These behaviors are typically a cry for attention, as our pets long for interaction and stimulation.
Thankfully, there’s a growing awareness of the need to provide our furry companions with dedicated spaces for play and exercise within our homes. Pet play yards are becoming an integral part of new home designs, and for good reason. Playtime is a cherished moment, whether it’s one-on-one bonding time with your pet or a lively romp with a group of four-legged friends.
All animals, just like humans, require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Additionally, ensuring their safety during unsupervised moments is paramount. As you embark on the journey of building a new home, it’s essential to consider these aspects to create an environment where your pets can thrive physically and emotionally. By doing so, you not only enhance their quality of life but also foster a harmonious and loving relationship between you and your furry family members.
If you’re in the process of planning a new home and have the intention of incorporating a dedicated pet suite, you might want to consider the versatility and pet-friendly features of a barndominium. Barndominiums are renowned for their spacious and open layouts, making them an ideal canvas for crafting pet-friendly spaces.
When it comes to flooring choices, one must-have option is heated, stained, and sealed polished concrete. This flooring not only exudes a sleek and modern aesthetic but is also a practical choice for households with both children and pets. Its easy-to-clean surface ensures hassle-free cleanups, whether it’s a muddy paw print or a spilled juice box.
You’ve probably come across those charming Instagram snapshots of goats and miniature donkeys strolling around homes, occasionally perched on stylish furniture as if they were pampered farm royalty. Well, the spacious floor plans of barndominiums can indeed accommodate a menagerie of pets comfortably, making them an excellent choice for those who want to create a true haven for their animal companions.
In fact, we recently had the opportunity to design a barn home for a client with a rather unique request. She desired a home where she could walk her horses straight through the residence, entering from the large double front entrance, passing through the house, and exiting at the rear. It was a fascinating project that piqued our curiosity, prompting us to wonder if she might be one of those animal-loving Instagram influencers, as her vision for a pet-friendly home was nothing short of extraordinary.
So, letโs start designing some special spaces for these pampered pets. You know they deserve a cozy little place to call their own!
ย Until next time, sweet friends,
Arlene
