A standard two-car garage runs roughly 24′ x 24′ and handles two vehicles with limited storage around them. Three-car layouts at 36′ wide give you room for a third vehicle, a mower, and a workbench. If you’re storing a boat, camper, or motorhome, look for plans with a bay depth of 40′ or more and a 14′-high overhead door. Because barndominium framing spans long distances without interior load-bearing walls, garage bays in these plans are typically wider and more open than what you’d get in a conventionally framed home.
The difference is scale and purpose. A garage stores vehicles. A shop is a working space — room to pull an engine, run a woodworking bench, or operate a business out of the building.
